(Nagahama Ramen Kotaro)

EN: Who would have thought that following a 23-hour trip (with stops included) I would still have enough energy to at dawn taste the delicacies that Japan can offer us.

When I arrived at Fukuoka airport I felt tired, but accomplished, I would say happier at that particular time by not having to wait longer, by another flight or having to hear the constant hum of the plane's engines. (That lasted a few hours to listen to them now want to pull your ears!)

From Fukuoka and dragging the suitcases, we picked up the bus and headed to Dazaifu, the beautiful Japanese city where I would stay the next few days.
Once there I thought that all I wanted was only a bath and shove me into bed.
(Believe me that after 23 hours trip there is no deodorant to save us besides a mighty bath!)

After the so desired soothing bath, I felt incredibly alert, not sleepy at all.

When the invitation was made to go out to eat something I didn't think twice, after all, I was in Japan. After so many years dreaming about the possibility of being there... something that even been there still seemed impossible, because I had the strange feeling that I had left my home in Portugal that day in the morning and arrived in Japan at dusk! (When in fact, I had already spent an entire day away since my departure)

We walk into an open restaurant not far from our place called:
(Nagahama Ramen Kotaro)

At that time, I confess it was the best thing we did, some ordinary mortals might think is crazy to eat "chicken satay" and "pasta" at midnight but to me, it was like food from the gods, which I dreamed for too long.

At that time I was unaware of some things about the Yakitori (satay) and that night I learned that the reason they put spiced cabbage with soy sauce and vinegar under the Yakitori it serves primarily to absorb the fat from the meat and is not expected to you to eat the cabbage, but if you like the taste, as was our case, you can eat the same without any problem.

Another curiosity, has to do with Ramen, not all people take the boiled egg on it (perhaps one person in ten has the luck) but been visitors in Japan can give you the right to have one in your Ramen, be thankful it is a way to show you the appreciation for your visit to the place.

Mos Burger um M maior! | Mos Burger a bigger M!

Mos Burguer (foto tirada no local)

| The real MOS BURGUER photograph taken at the spot.

EN: But ... I start talking about food in Japan with a post on fast food ?! Let's take it easy!

Naturally, during my stay in Japan I tasted and enjoyed many delicious things, some of those even become difficult to describe, because the intensity of flavors is so explosive that all our taste buds seem to unfold in to many more so we can enjoy with accuracy all that we offer them.

Amid of all this adventure of flavors, there was always time for a break of Asian food hand to test the "western" ... and what more "western" there is than the typical hamburger or better said the burger inside a loaf with the french fries.

One morning, in the rush to catch a train, I stopped by MOS BURGUER (a chain of Japanese fast food restaurants), it was founded in 1972 by Satoshi Sakurada in Tokyo. Since then the MOS opened in Taiwan in 1991, and throughout the Asia Pacific region. According to the website of MOS from the end of March 2015, they had more than 1,700 restaurants, including restaurants in Japan, Asia, the Pacific and Oceania.

Unfortunately MOS is not found in Europe... unfortunately, why ?!
Is not only a fast food chain like McDonald's or Burger King ?! (No advertising for these two well known "monsters"!)
What is the difference then between the Nippon chain versus the US ones, which dominate the entire market globally ?!

The big difference is obviously in the used products, many of us have tasted the products of the American chains and know what they taste like, the texture they have and everything else, most of the time we even doubt if that thing pressed that they serve us inside the bread is really meat or something that I fear to even imagine what it is.

I'm not very a big apologist of fast foods, but like all of us I am "sinful" and there's always that escapade to the nearest pizza or kebab when laziness is more than a lot!

In MOS the "laziness" of walking a few more meters was worth it, as the products there have superior quality, and appear to be very fresh and are signaled with the zone in which they were grown, (from what I was told is rotating from several places in the prefecture, so local food, during my stay, unfortunately happened the earthquake of Kumamoto, the products where from that area)... after said that I almost look like a TV commercial or that I'm doing publicity for the place, but the truth is that I was surprised by the positive.

The friendly service, and how they serve soon showed a remarkable difference to any kind of fast food restaurants.

If one day you go to Japan, and want to take a break from Japanese food or even only because you are in a hurry to get somewhere, enjoy and experience the MOS better than most western fast foods restaurants.

A Paixão que cresce! | The passion that grows!

*********************************************************

EN: Could I say that after visiting Japan I feel even more in love with the country?!... Yes, definitely... it's all I ever wanted and more I could ever want...
There are bad things?! There is! There are good things ?! There are ... too many to pass up!
Since I was a young girl I fantasized earnestly with my trip to the Land of the Rising Sun... often said with conviction: "I know when do not know how I just know that one day I will go..." Sometimes fantasies prove to be misleading, perhaps they were if it had gone too early yet in a time I knew little of the history and culture... and I confess that I still know very little, and I find something new every day that fascinates me!
Fate, or the circumstances life, are at least ironic when we least expect you are placed in that time and in that place desired for so long. So we feel bewildered and perplexed by what surrounds us!
At the beginning, there is a feeling of total disbelief, even after the plane had landed and we only heard the Japanese language, or see colourful placards with Kanji and Kana around us... we feel exhilarated, too "drug addict" to even believe that yes, we are finally there! And that is real !!

Finalmente aterrei! / Finally I landed!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The landing at Haneda airport after 11 hours of flight!! It was a nasty weather, a lot of rain and wind, but the joy of finally having under me the Japanese soil made it worth it!

Sobreviver a uma viagem de longo curso! / Survive a long flight!

E no fim a cereja no topo do bolo o efeito Jet Lag...

Muitas vezes seremos nós as vitimas da conversa com um tímido: "Excuse me, do you speak English?" ou o mais directo: "Can I talk with you?!"

*************************************************************

EN: Stops... waiting hours... and more hours on the plane! In the end may well be more than 24 hours travelling with little or no rest!... And in the end it comes "the icing on top of the cake" the Jet Lag effect...

Sometimes for those who usually travel in economy class the mere fact of stretching your legs may look like an act of a true juggler! Especially in smaller flight connections, that after 11 hours of flight will seem to be other 11 hours even just having one to three hours. (But don't be scared!!!)

How can we survive all this, without start walking through the ceiling of the plane, in the good old style of "Poltergeist"?!?! ...
If you are communicative and extroverted and like to "make conversation" with other passengers this may well be a way to forget that we have to face several hours of flight, who knows... we may find a new friend or even a new co-worker! Often we will be the victims instead of a conversation with a shy start of: "Excuse me, do you speak English?" or a more direct: "Can I talk with you?!"... For those who like to be isolated in their little corner away from mundane conversations this can be the end of the world, but why not give a try to know who is sit next to us,  after all, we may have to be together over 10 hours?! We may have a nice surprise... who knows?!

Far from conversations, because you are not geared to human communication, or because you are too shy (and/or travelling alone) you can always enjoy reading that book long forgotten on the shelf (or reread it), you can write what you are feeling the new journey, like memories, or draw if you are  an artist, there is always funny expressions between passengers and flight attendants who deserve to be registered, and finally you may pass your time watching movies and listening to music it can be always a good choice to kill time.

Today the long flights airlines offer some range of music and movies and other multimedia entertainment from where you can choose and watch/hear during the trip, but taking with you on a tablet your favourite music and movies and series that you want to catch up for some time, can be a much smarter option... that is if you don't mind to hear the best off Disney and the NOW 80's, albums etc...

Some say that the best thing to do on a long flight  is to sleep, so that the journey passes by in an instant, this statement is something of a truth, that if you are from that the kind of people that falls asleep anywhere in a snap, not matter if there is noise or silence, if they are lying or seated... no matter where!
But if the minimum noise can wake you up, then the plane is not at all your "dream valley", only the continuous roar of the engines will ensure you that there will be no way to fall asleep!

Long journeys may, in fact, be something that leaves us abundantly exhausted and dreaming for a soft bed, silence and hours of endless sleep, but is always worth it, have fun in them to the fullest, because you never know when you will have the opportunity of the experience again.

| Fear of Flying?!

________________________________________________

EN: The fear of flying must be inherent a bit in all of us, people can tell us a thousand times that the plane is the safest transportation in the world, that the level of accidents are minimal (which in fact is true, when compared with other means of transportation that we use most often, such as automobiles, where in a day can happen thousands of accidents)... but the fear that something might go wrong up there in the air always exists, even if unconsciously. For all we know if something fails the chances of survival are slim to nil.

I would be lying if I would say to you that I "shove" myself happily inside a
flying "metal tube", without feeling at least a slight shiver down my spine or rather say some anxiety... in my life I only had (so far) four flight experiences, all them within European airspace. Those flights in fact made me lose a bit of the "fear of flying" because... hey!!... after all how many times in our lifes we can have the feeling that we are floating ?! (When we are dreaming doesn't count, ok ?!)

That  is the feeling we never forget when flying for the first time is when the plane accelerates on the track and finally rises from the ground, creating within us the feeling that we float free in space! Perhaps the only drawback of all the excitement is the throbbing ears,  due to the sudden change of altitude. (Chewing a gum or only mimic the chewing motion is a help to allay that feeling).

But the fear of flying, or rather let's say more that is the fear that something might go wrong, shouldn't prevent us from traveling or even
accomplish the dream of discover other cultures and latitudes.

Life, this one is too short for us to be prisoners of the fear feeling, be that of flying, falling, losing a job, death, etc.In a world increasingly dominated by fear, give in to this feeling without fighting is the same as shorten up our life even more!

--------------------------------------------------------

EN: When you do so many stops (in my case will be three) between airports is better to try our best to travel light and not drag around luggage that may cause us to lose unnecessary time at the "Check In" since the plane waits for no one  and with 2/3 hours between flights is better not to risk!
Following the advice of some more experienced travelers I will use in this adventure only a backpack of 40L and try to stay well below the 8kg allowed inside the cabin of the aircraft!
