Fantasia e Emoção Ghibli | Fantasy and Emotion Ghibli

EN: Much more than a museum, is here in this almost enchanted place where we can find the fantasy and the enormous passion of an extraordinary man and of his whole team for the world of animation.

In this peculiar museum located in Inokashira Park in Mitaka, (三鷹の森ジブリ美術館 - Mitaka no Mori Jiburi Bijutsukan), you can glimpse the work of the Japanese animation studio Ghibli, (should be read as Jeeblee).

The museum can be classified as a mixture of a museum for children with a museum of technology and fine arts, but it is above all dedicated to the art and technique of animation.

In this museum you can delight in every detail and go back in time, while we meet face to face with an almost life-size replica of the Catbus from "My neighbor Totoro", where children, till 12 years old) play happily laughing and hugging a huge "teddy bear", where adults sigh for an opportunity to do as well. (In such a way that the museum recently decided to acquire an adult version!)

Outside we came across with a very "cute" Café, called "The Straw Hat", where we can taste some delicacies, (where Miyazaki wanted particularly for the food served there to be in "home-style").
It remind us of some of the studio memorable films such as "Porco Rosso" or even "Kiki, Delivery Service", (although the waiting time to get into it may be a bit longer than we would like, but is worth it all the minutes outside, even on a rainy day like ours was).

On the top floor, we have a garden where we come across with a scenery taken straight out of "Laputa - Castle in the Sky" and where we find one of its emblematic flying robots, waiting for us, made entirely of bronze it took about a year to recreate it.

Inside the museum, we also have a bookstore where we can buy the most varied material related to  the studios, artbooks, varied merchandise, novels, and mangas. (This bookstore is often crowded, always with people queuing at the door to be able to enter.)

The Museum also have a small and cozy cine-theater for exclusive short films made by Studio Ghibli, which we can watch there. This cinema has windows with automated shutters that close and open before and after each short. Hayao Miyazaki projected the cinema with small children in mind, who could possibly feel scared to be inside the cinema.

On the lower floor of the museum, there is an exhibition where we are shown the history and science of the animation world, from its earliest times including a huge three-dimensional zoetrope called "Bouncing Totoro", all made with models of the characters of "My neighbor Totoro ".

On the first floor we find a recreation of an animation studio, called "Where a movie is born", the exhibition is spread over five rooms and has a main objective to demonstrate the creative process of an animation filmmaker, as well its techniques of illustration. Crowded with books and toys, drawings and notes covering the walls from top to bottom. Another parallel exhibition shows us the whole process of creating an animated film, with sketches, storyboard, keyframing, cleanup, coloring and painting scenarios, all as it was traditionally done before the arrival of computer graphics. We can also read some funny stories of some peculiar situations that happened in the studio.

The tickets for the Ghibli Museum are unfortunately only accepted if purchased in advance. These booking tickets can be purchased online, for more information and details about it please visit the official website -> http://www.ghibli-museum.jp/en/ticket-information/.

At the entrance of the museum, the purchased tickets are exchanged for a 35mm film celluloid with a scene from one of the Ghibli studio films. A unique memory that will stay with us forever!

It is forbidden to take photos inside the Ghibli Museum, but we are allowed to photograph the exterior of the building, the surrounding gardens and we can also do it inside the museum cafe. This "prohibition" is more than a protection against copyright theft, it was Miyazaki himself who "decreed" the rule, so that people could enjoy every moment, without taking refuge behind the camera lenses, so that all could live every moment more intensely, resorting to memory, to remember every second and emotion experienced!

Pepper o Robot

******************************************************

During my stay in Japan I came across twice with the robot "Pepper" as we passed near to the SoftBank's branches.
Pepper is a humanoid robot that was created by Aldebaran Robotics and the SoftBank, was designed with the ability to read emotions and analyze expressions and tones of voice.
Pepper is not exactly a functional robot for home use. Instead, the creators claim that the aim is to "make people happy"

But... interestingly this little robot shown have a little more than the ability to read emotions, or maybe he was able to read them too well. After we asked the robot a couple of questions and I confess that we "nag" him a little (ok, I admit perhaps too much), This little one "turned the game" when we asked whether we wanted to know our fortune of the day, of course we said yes and the "little rascal" responds... "the fortune today is the worst"... dumbfounded we looked at each other and burst out laughing, whether it was deliberate or a mere chance (with a perfect timing) the truth is that it was truly fun to find out this little guy.

In the SoftBank website they describe it as "a gentle, pleasant and surprising robot," well he is surprising that is for sure and we have tested it in first hand, with a few laughs in the middle and even with some surprise. (https://www.ald.softbankrobotics.com/en/cool-robots/pepper)
If you pass around a "Pepper" robot have a chat with it him and be prepared for a good surprise.

Surpresas e Lugares Únicos | Surprises and Unique Places

N3331 - Bar e Café (imagem retirada do site http://n3331.com/)

EN: There are places that captivate us, either by their originality or because they are unique and so different from what we are used to in our ordinary day to day life.

Tokyo is such a place, where the peculiar blends and even mingles with the mundane workday of any capital in the world ... but in a fast forward mode!

Tokyo is without a doubt an amazing metropolis that sleeps little or nothing at all, where young and old walk up and down the busy streets, regardless of the time of the day, always running, always ready to meet schedules, the tokyoites (and those who live there) seem sometimes (to those who are outsiders) as they were like automata, cybernetic machines with the specific objective and mathematical precision of moving from A to B... quickly, effectively, and above all without error.

In the midst of this world of colors, light and much bustle there is always places where both the tourists and the resident can escape the madness and seek relaxation to return later to the plunge of the endless vortex that is the city of Tokyo.

In Tokyo, there are thousands of cafes, many of them themed, the most famous "maids coffee"... (which I do not appreciate that much) or better that cozy little place where we can scratch the tiny head of a lucky cat!
In the midst of all these cafes, we found a favorite, whose theme is the favorite transportation for many of us... the train!

The old platform of the Manseibashi station that was adapted to a cafe, where we can enjoy a relaxing time. Right in the heart of Tokyo, and at the same time enjoy a coffee or a full meal, while we watch the trains pass next to us, a will is constant but so comforting. (All this very close to the famous Akihabara, the whole animé lover, and technology and want to visit)

This coffee is N3331 ("en san san san ichi") a unique place, but I advise to visit outside the hours of major affluence, they may have a time limit to stay inside the cafe, taking into account that there may be several customers wanting to have a sitting place.
In our case it was a calm time where we could relax and talk calmly without any stress, as we talked we saw the other customers coming in and out, to laugh and have fun, as anywhere in the world where a group of friends gathers together after another day of work.

"INTERSECT BY LEXUS"

Foto retirada do Google | Photo taken from Google

No Intersect | In Intersect

Peixe com ameijoas e vegetais | Fish with clams and Vegetables
Bife Japonês Wagyu | Japanese Beef Wagyu 和牛

EN: I couldn't visit Japan without knowing Tokyo, a city that never seems to sleep or even stop breathing for a second! Whether they're working or having fun!

I confess I stood with many contradictory feelings towards Tokyo, which I will deepen more details in other topics in this small "diary" online that I share with you here.

What I can say from Tokyo is that is a city that lives in a constant rush hour, "running" as if there was no day or night and all was merged into a single large busy time when everything and everyone around us run "crazily "like ants in a frenzy aligned and orderly towards their goal.

In the midst of all the city agitation (to which I was used to) and right on the first day, soon after we dropped the bags on the Airbnb, where we would stay for the next two nights it was located in Ginza, this Airbnb will give itself a post in this blog but not for the best reasons.
We visited the "INTERSECT", a place where design, good food, and the automobile industry are mixed in one, in an environment where elegance par excellence is present, since we entered until we left, leaving us a feeling good emotions.

The group of employees of the "INTERSECT" are friendly professionals and always helpful,  because of so much warmth and good taste we feel almost treated I can say as "kings".

When we arrived at the restaurant (which we booked in advance) our table was not yet available, so we decided it would be better to leave for a little while to "make some time" and we would come back later.

We had been perhaps just over 300 meters away when we heard the voice of one of the staff members calling for us.

We were surprised by the fact that he had run after us all that way only to warn us that the table was, after all, ready and waiting.

I confess that I came to feel somewhat ashamed and embarrassed by the fact (albeit involuntarily) that I have made the employee run all that way! But it was something that also showed the level of Japanese professionalism, which so often we hear about.

It must have been, without exaggeration some the best restaurant I visited in my life, at least until that moment!
The menu was presented to us dish by dish each time we were served, always with delicacy and was described in detail from the ingredients used in its making... much I could say, but the best thing is to present some of the photos (above).

It was a refined and truly tasty menu... (but not the best for those who are vegetarian)... the "INTERSECT" was truly a unique and pleasant experience that I hope to repeat in the future... maybe at the next opportunity.

The staff has a gentle and kind to customers that can be almost incomparable with other places in the world. We were having trouble finding directions to meet with a friendly couple with whom we had arranged to meet that evening and when we asked if they could help us they returned to us a Business Card  of the "INTERSECT" with a post it with directions to the place we were looking for.

It was, therefore, a good start in Tokyo. Needless to say we easily found our friends in the location, slightly delayed, but fortunately, we didn't get lost!

This whole adventure in the "INTERSECT" was possible thanks to the accumulation of mileage on the airline. Miles that combined have given us the chance to enjoy a unique dinner.

(Nagahama Ramen Kotaro)

EN: Who would have thought that following a 23-hour trip (with stops included) I would still have enough energy to at dawn taste the delicacies that Japan can offer us.

When I arrived at Fukuoka airport I felt tired, but accomplished, I would say happier at that particular time by not having to wait longer, by another flight or having to hear the constant hum of the plane's engines. (That lasted a few hours to listen to them now want to pull your ears!)

From Fukuoka and dragging the suitcases, we picked up the bus and headed to Dazaifu, the beautiful Japanese city where I would stay the next few days.
Once there I thought that all I wanted was only a bath and shove me into bed.
(Believe me that after 23 hours trip there is no deodorant to save us besides a mighty bath!)

After the so desired soothing bath, I felt incredibly alert, not sleepy at all.

When the invitation was made to go out to eat something I didn't think twice, after all, I was in Japan. After so many years dreaming about the possibility of being there... something that even been there still seemed impossible, because I had the strange feeling that I had left my home in Portugal that day in the morning and arrived in Japan at dusk! (When in fact, I had already spent an entire day away since my departure)

We walk into an open restaurant not far from our place called:
(Nagahama Ramen Kotaro)

At that time, I confess it was the best thing we did, some ordinary mortals might think is crazy to eat "chicken satay" and "pasta" at midnight but to me, it was like food from the gods, which I dreamed for too long.

At that time I was unaware of some things about the Yakitori (satay) and that night I learned that the reason they put spiced cabbage with soy sauce and vinegar under the Yakitori it serves primarily to absorb the fat from the meat and is not expected to you to eat the cabbage, but if you like the taste, as was our case, you can eat the same without any problem.

Another curiosity, has to do with Ramen, not all people take the boiled egg on it (perhaps one person in ten has the luck) but been visitors in Japan can give you the right to have one in your Ramen, be thankful it is a way to show you the appreciation for your visit to the place.

Mos Burger um M maior! | Mos Burger a bigger M!

Mos Burguer (foto tirada no local)

| The real MOS BURGUER photograph taken at the spot.

EN: But ... I start talking about food in Japan with a post on fast food ?! Let's take it easy!

Naturally, during my stay in Japan I tasted and enjoyed many delicious things, some of those even become difficult to describe, because the intensity of flavors is so explosive that all our taste buds seem to unfold in to many more so we can enjoy with accuracy all that we offer them.

Amid of all this adventure of flavors, there was always time for a break of Asian food hand to test the "western" ... and what more "western" there is than the typical hamburger or better said the burger inside a loaf with the french fries.

One morning, in the rush to catch a train, I stopped by MOS BURGUER (a chain of Japanese fast food restaurants), it was founded in 1972 by Satoshi Sakurada in Tokyo. Since then the MOS opened in Taiwan in 1991, and throughout the Asia Pacific region. According to the website of MOS from the end of March 2015, they had more than 1,700 restaurants, including restaurants in Japan, Asia, the Pacific and Oceania.

Unfortunately MOS is not found in Europe... unfortunately, why ?!
Is not only a fast food chain like McDonald's or Burger King ?! (No advertising for these two well known "monsters"!)
What is the difference then between the Nippon chain versus the US ones, which dominate the entire market globally ?!

The big difference is obviously in the used products, many of us have tasted the products of the American chains and know what they taste like, the texture they have and everything else, most of the time we even doubt if that thing pressed that they serve us inside the bread is really meat or something that I fear to even imagine what it is.

I'm not very a big apologist of fast foods, but like all of us I am "sinful" and there's always that escapade to the nearest pizza or kebab when laziness is more than a lot!

In MOS the "laziness" of walking a few more meters was worth it, as the products there have superior quality, and appear to be very fresh and are signaled with the zone in which they were grown, (from what I was told is rotating from several places in the prefecture, so local food, during my stay, unfortunately happened the earthquake of Kumamoto, the products where from that area)... after said that I almost look like a TV commercial or that I'm doing publicity for the place, but the truth is that I was surprised by the positive.

The friendly service, and how they serve soon showed a remarkable difference to any kind of fast food restaurants.

If one day you go to Japan, and want to take a break from Japanese food or even only because you are in a hurry to get somewhere, enjoy and experience the MOS better than most western fast foods restaurants.

A Paixão que cresce! | The passion that grows!

EN: Could I say that after visiting Japan I feel even more in love with the country?!... Yes, definitely... it's all I ever wanted and more I could ever want...
There are bad things?! There is! There are good things ?! There are ... too many to pass up!
Since I was a young girl I fantasized earnestly with my trip to the Land of the Rising Sun... often said with conviction: "I know when do not know how I just know that one day I will go..." Sometimes fantasies prove to be misleading, perhaps they were if it had gone too early yet in a time I knew little of the history and culture... and I confess that I still know very little, and I find something new every day that fascinates me!
Fate, or the circumstances life, are at least ironic when we least expect you are placed in that time and in that place desired for so long. So we feel bewildered and perplexed by what surrounds us!
At the beginning, there is a feeling of total disbelief, even after the plane had landed and we only heard the Japanese language, or see colourful placards with Kanji and Kana around us... we feel exhilarated, too "drug addict" to even believe that yes, we are finally there! And that is real !!

Finalmente aterrei! / Finally I landed!

The landing at Haneda airport after 11 hours of flight!! It was a nasty weather, a lot of rain and wind, but the joy of finally having under me the Japanese soil made it worth it!

Sobreviver a uma viagem de longo curso! / Survive a long flight!

E no fim a cereja no topo do bolo o efeito Jet Lag...

Muitas vezes seremos nós as vitimas da conversa com um tímido: "Excuse me, do you speak English?" ou o mais directo: "Can I talk with you?!"

EN: Stops... waiting hours... and more hours on the plane! In the end may well be more than 24 hours travelling with little or no rest!... And in the end it comes "the icing on top of the cake" the Jet Lag effect...

Sometimes for those who usually travel in economy class the mere fact of stretching your legs may look like an act of a true juggler! Especially in smaller flight connections, that after 11 hours of flight will seem to be other 11 hours even just having one to three hours. (But don't be scared!!!)

How can we survive all this, without start walking through the ceiling of the plane, in the good old style of "Poltergeist"?!?! ...
If you are communicative and extroverted and like to "make conversation" with other passengers this may well be a way to forget that we have to face several hours of flight, who knows... we may find a new friend or even a new co-worker! Often we will be the victims instead of a conversation with a shy start of: "Excuse me, do you speak English?" or a more direct: "Can I talk with you?!"... For those who like to be isolated in their little corner away from mundane conversations this can be the end of the world, but why not give a try to know who is sit next to us,  after all, we may have to be together over 10 hours?! We may have a nice surprise... who knows?!

Far from conversations, because you are not geared to human communication, or because you are too shy (and/or travelling alone) you can always enjoy reading that book long forgotten on the shelf (or reread it), you can write what you are feeling the new journey, like memories, or draw if you are  an artist, there is always funny expressions between passengers and flight attendants who deserve to be registered, and finally you may pass your time watching movies and listening to music it can be always a good choice to kill time.

Today the long flights airlines offer some range of music and movies and other multimedia entertainment from where you can choose and watch/hear during the trip, but taking with you on a tablet your favourite music and movies and series that you want to catch up for some time, can be a much smarter option... that is if you don't mind to hear the best off Disney and the NOW 80's, albums etc...

Some say that the best thing to do on a long flight  is to sleep, so that the journey passes by in an instant, this statement is something of a truth, that if you are from that the kind of people that falls asleep anywhere in a snap, not matter if there is noise or silence, if they are lying or seated... no matter where!
But if the minimum noise can wake you up, then the plane is not at all your "dream valley", only the continuous roar of the engines will ensure you that there will be no way to fall asleep!

Long journeys may, in fact, be something that leaves us abundantly exhausted and dreaming for a soft bed, silence and hours of endless sleep, but is always worth it, have fun in them to the fullest, because you never know when you will have the opportunity of the experience again.

EN: Japan is indeed a country full of contrasts, smells, colours and flavours some which we can only imagine a third of them, even having been there!
Each sound and word heard awakens in us the natural curiosity of a potential traveller! Even those who have just started the adventure that is going to an entire continent to get there, all with the anxiety of a child about to open a gift, so much desired, on that Christmas Eve.
Every hour on the plane is removed with an increasing joy, every stop and every waiting at the airport a challenge, as a game level surpassed, for the grand finale, the reward, until that moment our feet touch finally the soil of the land desired for so long.
And everything seems still like a dream.
